Math Club

Mathematics is described as “the Queen of the Sciences and the King of the Arts”. The Math club functions as fun based activity for the primary classes basically to eradicate their phobia for the subject in their formative years. It helps the middle school children to enjoy, appreciate and acquire basic knowledge of the subject by organizing competitive group activities, puzzles, visits to museum, and expos conducted by other schools organization. Math club provides a platform for the secondary and senior secondary students to enrich and discover the elegance of the subject, its intrinsic aesthetics and inner beauty by organizing Math Expo and lectures by eminent resource persons.

THE MATH CLUB ACTIVITIES

JULY 2011

On 21st of July, 2011, all the students of class IX solved Sudoku puzzles as  part of their math club activity .Each student was given two puzzles with  different level of difficulty.

Symboku was conducted for the students of Class VIII on 20 july 2011. It was an individual activity in which the students had to solve a 9x9 sudoku grid with symbols.

As part of the Math club activity, solving Number Chains was conducted for the students of Class X on 19 july 2011 . It was an individual activity in which the students had to solve two number chains in the least possible time. The activity tested the analytical skills of the students.

 Students of class XII were taken on a visit to Ramanujan Museum located at Royapuram , Chennai on 16th July 2011. The students found the visit  very interesting and were interactive asking  questions about the genius of the yester century. They were surprised to know that many mathematicians of today are working on Ramanujan’s conjectures though they are unable to  prove them yet. They also came to know about his life history through the self -explanatory photographs displayed there.

A written mathematics quiz was conducted on 13/07/2011 for the students of class VII as part of a club activity. The students had to answer 20 questions in 20 minutes .It was informative and the children participated with great enthusiasm.

A Math club activity  on ‘Drawing scenery out of shapes’ was conducted for class III on 8th July,2011. The children were given A4 size sheets to project their creativity mixed with the knowledge of mathematical shapes. The children were able to relate Math with nature and shapes very well .They came out with excellent innovative  drawings which reflected their interest in Math and nature as well.

August 2011

As  part of mathematics club activity, the students of class VI were addressed by Mrs. Jegatha Suresh, Head of the department of Mathematics, BVM Group of Schools on 03 August 2011.  She presented a power point presentation through which students were exposed to MIF (Math Is Fun) and “Think Differently”. She also explained the easy way to find the square of a number which ends with 5. She gave several examples to make them understand. Students interacted interestingly. It was informative and the children participated with great enthusiasm.

A Math club activity on COSTUME DESIGNING USING SHAPES was conducted for class IV students on 9th August ,2011.The students were given an opportunity to design their own creative costumes based on MATHEMATICAL SHAPES in their co-operative learning groups. The students were able to design in lot of shapes with their groups’ co-operation. They showed great interest by trying to make accessories on shapes matching those dresses.

September 2011

A guest lecture was organized as a Math club activity for class XI on 3rd September 2011, in the school premises. Dr. K.N. Raghavan, Professor of Indian Institute of Mathematical Sciences gave a lecture on the topic ‘Ruler and Compass Constructions’, which covered the Possibilities and Conditions of Constructing Regular Polygons using ruler and compass. Students participated and enjoyed the session enthusiastically.

October 2011

Math quiz was conducted in the school auditorium for the class XI students on 19th October 2011.Four groups were formed house wise, comprising of 3 students in each group. The quiz had interesting rounds such as visual round, crossword puzzle and number hunt.

November 2011

A Math club activity on MAGIC SQUARE was conducted for class III on November 3rd, 2011. Students were given 3x3 magic squares to be solved.  They were amused to see numbers 1-9 arranged in such a way that their sum is 15 by any row or column. At the end of the session they were taught the trick to find the answer in an easy way.

MODEL MAKING CIRCLES

The club activity ‘Model making using circles was conducted for students of Class 7 on Thursday, 17th November ,2011 in their respective classrooms.The children participated with great enthusiasm and came up with many innovative ideas like using a pizza to demonstrate parts of a circle, a giant wheel and  U.F.O. to mention a few.

INNOVATIVE MATHEMATICS FORMULAE

A lecture on  “Innovative mathematics formulae” was conducted for students of Class 8  on Friday 19th November ,2011.The children participated with great enthusiasm and learnt quite  a few interesting formulae viz. finding the name and age of a person using Maths. The session was conducted by Mr. T. R. Natarajan.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

Math club of Bala Vidya Mandir conducted a Crossword Puzzle for the students of class 6 on 30th November 2011, in their respective class rooms.  The students participated enthusiastically and eagerly solved the puzzle given.  This activity helped the students to think out of box.

FRACTIONS OF INGREDIENTS IN CUISINES AND BEVERAGES OF ISA COUNTRIES

Students of class V took part in the math club activity cum ISA activity on the topic: “Fractions of ingredients in Cuisines and beverages of ISA countries”    in their respective class rooms on   3rd December, 2011 Thursday, between 2.40-3.20 p.m. Children enjoyed it very well and presented  the fractional form of a tea-spoon and table spoon as well.

JANUARY 2012

               A  Math Quiz  was  conducted for class IV students on 12th January, 2012.Thefinalist were chosen  after a preliminary round .They participated enthusiastically and were able to crack most of the questions. The  activity  was a great feast  to them.
