Heritage Club

The Heritage Club of Bala Vidya Mandir endeavours to enlighten the children about the rich Indian Culture. In this process the student members of the club are involved in various activities by which they visit Heritage sites, participate in quiz, paint various Heritage sites of Chennai and India and hold exhibitions of Heritage objects. They also learn to draw kolams. At present the members are making short films on Heritage activities to be posted on a website which the students from the other parts of the country can view. To instill and educate the children with values and keep them deep rooted in the traditional culture of India, the club devices activities which they enjoy and learn.

THE HERITAGE CLUB ACTIVITIES

JULY 2011

The trip to Dhakshina Chitra was conducted on13-7-2011. Students learnt about the rich Indian Heritage of various states of India. Our guide Dr.Ms. Chitra Mahadevan brought to light all the intricate and varied styles in the architecture of Kerala, TamilNadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Significance of the lotus in every construction and the spiritual significance of swan were explained in detail.  The efforts of weavers from various parts of the country were also highlighted. The tour of Dhakshina Chitra by Dr.Chitra enabled the children to learn more about the history and heritage our land.

Other important points explained were

  1. Usage of Natural dyes.
  2. Story of Dhanvanthiri
  3. Copper plate inscription and manuscripts
  4. Importance of Panchaloha
  5. Types of landscapes found in TamilNadu:Nethyal,Maritham,Mullai,Palai and Kurunji.

The Heritage club of Bala Vidya Mandir organized a guest lecture on the various heritages sites of India on19th July 2011.It was an interactive session between the members of the club and Mrs Latha Nathan a member of Namma Mylapore. A powerpoint on the Heritages and culture of India was shown to the students.

AUGUST 2011

Students from class 11  participated in powerpoint making on “Heritage sites” conducted by “Mylapore Times”in the month of August.

SEPTEMBER 2011

    On 8-9-11 students from class 7 participated in a skit, ppt and dance conducted by “Mylapore Heritage”. The objective was to understand the necessity of preserving our heritage.

    On 18-9-2011 Students of  class 6,7 & 8 participated in an essay writing competition on the  topic “Indru Naalai Netru”.

    The Intach conducted a debate on “Metro rails are spoiling our Heritage” at Shankara Vidyashram in the month of September and Namratha and Meenakshi of class 10  participated in the debate and won the first place and best speaker prize.

    OCTOBER 2011

    3-10-2011 students have started working on the activity of film making and have uploaded the first short film on “Save Water”.

    NOVEMBER 2011

    On 1-11-2011 students of Class 8  participated in a writing and drawing activity on Rabindra Nath Tagore on the occasion  of his 150th Birthday. 

    On 20-11-2011 the students participated in Madras Day Celebration Organized by “The Yellow Bus” School. Two students from class 9 Prerna.P and Uttara won prizes  in  Elocution on the topic “Emminent Personality”.
